Vice President delivers Convocation Address of IIIT-Sri City “Use Science & Technology to bring in a positive change in the lives of people,” Vice President tells Techies

Sri City, April 23, 2019: – Hon’ble Vice President of India Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest of the first convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Sri City (IIITS), held on Tuesday at its campus. Prof. G. Kannabiran, Director, IIITS extended a warm welcome and presented a report on the institute and the academic courses and study programmes being offered. Mr. C, Srinivasa Raju, Chairman, Sri City & Member of Board of Governors of IIITS presided over the ceremony. Other Members of Board of Governors, including Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy, Founder Managing Director, Sri City, Prof. U.B. Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad, Prof. P.J. Narayanan, Director, IIIT Hyderabad, and Prof. Satyanarayana, Director, IIT Tirupati were present in the convocation.

Delivering the convocation address the Vice President congratulated the students and said,”You are the proud first batch graduating from this institution. I am sure that as the first batch you must have set a good example for others to follow. Irrespective of whether you pursue higher studies or take up a job, strive to excel in your chosen field. Make your alma mater and parents feel proud of you. As you progress in your career, never remain complacent but set new benchmarks and try to achieve them with sincerity, discipline and hard work. Commit yourselves to put in optimal efforts and I am sure you will come out with flying colours. I once again wish you all the very best.”

Asking students to set new benchmarks and try to achieve them with sincerity, discipline and hard work, the Vice President advised them not to remain complacent and to put in optimal efforts to reach their goals. He advised students to use Science & Technology to bring in a positive change in the lives of people.

Appreciating the support of Mr. Srinivasa Raju and Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy for the phenomenal growth of IIITS, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said that IIITS is uniquely located in a large and modern industrial city comprising of several MNCs and domestic industries. “Probably there is no other institute with this kind of advantage,” he mentioned.

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu presented gold medals to the toppers in 2017 & 2018 in ECE and CEC streams, viz. Varshita, Krutikaran Singh Bharadwaj, Aiswarya and Santoshini Reddy, all in absentia. Their parents received the medals on their behalf.

Reminiscing the long association of Mr. Venkaiah Naidu with IIITS, Mr. Srinivasa Raju said,”Sir, you had graced the foundation laying ceremony of the institute in 2015, and subsequently inaugurated the Centre for Smart Cities. We are deeply honoured to have you amidst us on the momentous occasion of first convocation.”

During the convocation, altogether 135 students received degrees, that includes 105 under graduates, 29 Honours degrees and one MS degree.

IIITS was established on public and private partnership (PPP) mode by the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) and Government of Andhra Pradesh with Sri City as industrial partner. It has grown to be one of the top institutes among its peers based on various programmes and initiatives. The institute offers UG programmes in two disciplines- Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). It also offers MS and PhD programmes in both disciplines. IIITS has a total strength now is 750 students, and about 40 percent of the students are from other States of India including the northern States. IIITS admits students through JEE Main exam and follows Government of India norms for admissions. Recently, IIITS has opened admission to students from abroad through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) and Study in India programmes of Government of India.
