Tirupati is a major town located on the foothills of the Eastern Ghats at a distance of about 80 km from Sri City. Tirupati is world-renowned as a temple town, and is the hub for pilgrims visiting the revered temples in the Tirumala hills, one of the oldest rock mountain formations in the world. The town has benefitted immensely due to its strategic location, and is today one of the major economic and educational centres in the State of Andhra Pradesh. The Tirupati International Airport serves as the main gateway for air transport to the region.
The Venkateswara Temple, the main temple in Tirumala, is located on one of the seven peaks that form the Tirumala hills. The temple is believed to be more than 17 centuries old, and is part of many ancient works of literature and folklore. The temple is also a fine example of Dravidian art and architecture, and is famous for its wood carvings.
