Sriharikota is the barrier island that separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal. Sriharikota is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, also known as the Sriharikota Range (SHAR), which houses India’s only satellite launch facility.
While Sriharikota is about 20 km by road from Sri City, due to the separation caused by the lake, the main launch pads at the space centre can be seen from a vantage point in Sri City. The vantage point offers breathtaking views of rocket launches, with reflections on the water surface amplifying the visual impact of the event.
The Satish Dhawan Space Centre also permits guided tours of its premises and the launch pads, but with prior permission.
